Total paint and decorating store sales were up in the second quarter of 2013, 1 percentage point over second quarter sales of 2012. Overall 2013 year-to-date sales (Jan-June) were also up 3.5% from the same time period in 2012.
Regional sales continued to struggle in some areas, with the Midwest posting a second straight loss in overall store sales. The Northeast, South and Western regions posted modest gains in overall store sales as compared to the first quarter 2012, with year-to-date performance fairly even in all product categories across all regions.
Paint sales continued to show losses for the Midwest and Canada, with the West showing a modest decline in window treatment sales year-to-date as compared to the same time period in 2012.
With new housing starts down from 1,000,000 in the first quarter of 2013, home interest rates began to move up about this time. Used home sales, however, increased in the second quarter, slightly above 5,000,000 units. It has yet to be seen what effect this will have on the overall economy, and what effect (if any) it will have on sales for independent store owners.
