With 2012 just around the corner, quite a few national and regional paint manufacturers are releasing their color trend forecasts for the coming year. Common threads seem to be the use of color as a remedy to what ails us—whether it be a splash of bold color to lift our mood or a tranquil color to provide a backdrop for a peaceful retreat.

Here are specific color forecasts from five of the paint industry’s most well-known paint manufacturers:

Benjamin Moore: Blue Will Be Big

Benjamin Moore color experts are forecasting that blue will be big in 2012 as the population seeks out a sense of calm, trust, and the tried-and-true. The paint company’s top color pick for the coming year is Wythe Blue HC-143, a blue green hue with a cool gray cast to it.

“It’s interesting that Wythe Blue is from our historical color collection,” said Sonu Mathew, ASID, IIDA and Benjamin Moore’s senior interior designer. “We’ve actually cited it because it has a modern edge, yet it’s so rooted in history and is respectful of what’s classic and enduring.”

Benjamin Moore’s Wythe Blue evokes nature’s primal elements of earth, sky, water, flora and fauna. It’s a color that can create a serene and restful, comfortable and stable ambiance—an antidote to the frenetic pace of today’s daily life.

Another trend blue for 2012 is Benjamin Moore’s Montpelier AF-555. Also on the gray scale, this is a steelier tone, but it, too, has a timeless quality to it. Amethyst Shadow 1441 is another call out for 2012 that borders the gray scale while bridging between purple and blue.

Other colors trending in 2012 from Benjamin Moore are:

Grays such as Stardust 2108-40, Nimbus Gray 2131-50, Sharkskin 2139-30, Storm Cloud Gray 2140-30 and Revere Pewter HC-172;

Whites and neutrals such as Ballet White OC-9, White Dove OC-17, Battenberg  AF-70, Refined AF-75 and Pashmina AF-100;

Spicier tones like Gypsy Love 2085-30 and Persimmon 2088-40; and

Earthy tones like French Press AF-170, Masada AF-220, Farm Fresh AF-360, Dunmore Cream HC-29, and Fresh Olive 2149-30.

Benjamin Moore’s 2012 Color Trends Card can be found on display and is available free of charge at Benjamin Moore paint retailers nationwide. Online tools also are offered, such as the Personal Color Viewer, the ben Color Capture app, and the Color Life e-zine for iPads and Androids. All are easy-to-use resources for visualizing how colors will harmonize and complement one another. See the Benjamin Moore website for more information.

Red Punch

Red Punch from PPG

PPG: Colors Go Clean and Bright

PPG predicts a return to clean bright colors for 2012 and 2013. The company expects homeowners, who were reluctant in the past, to take the leap into deep and vivid hues this year. A prime example is Rum Punch (231-7), a saturated red that PPG considers to be the color of the year.

“Intensity is a survival strategy in crisis times,” explains Dee Schlotter, Brand Manager for The Voice of Color® and PPG Pittsburgh Paints®. “For some, it means seeking out extremes of sensation, rebelling against the bland existence that comes with cynicism and disenchantment. For others it means ‘unplugging’ in order to reconnect with a life they feel is fleeting.”

Rum Punch is from the PPG Pittsburgh Paints “Local Revival” 2012 color trend color. This trend is about unplugging from a complicated life and living more simply and in harmony with one’s community.The palette is a mix of red berries, stone gray and solid brown refreshed by a creamy white. In addition to Rum Punch, PPG Pittsburgh Paints colors in this palette are Burnt Red (133-7), Pralines and Cream (117-3), Earl Grey (522-5) and Poppy Pods (526-6).

Intense colors are also featured in the Beauty Queen palette, designed specifically for the unapologetically confident woman with such colors as sharp fuchsia pink and juicy purple softened by cosmetic pink and freshened with brighter teal and white. Colors such as Grape Juice (240-7), Tutti Frutti (138-7) and Brandy Alexander (535-3) give you an idea of just what this palette is all about.

Deco Candy, a third color palette, brings together vibrant colors and fun design, including such colors as Tangerine Dream (123-7), Persian Blue (153-5) and an almost neon-yellow called Citrus Spice (110-7). For a lower-key color experience, PPG offers a fourth palette, Quiet Tech, featuring inky blues and earthy, calming neutrals.

Sico: Take-Charge Optimism

Canadian paint brand Sico is predicitng a color palette of “take-charge” optimism for 2012-2013. As Mylène Gévry, Marketing Communications Manager for Sico, explained: “From full-bodied hues with strong character to hushed pastels, the coming year’s palette represents people’s growing need for and interest in expressing concepts, viewpoints and approaches.”

According to research conducted by Sico’s international team of color experts, there are three prevailing colour themes for the year ahead, each reflecting the consumer’s need need to make and celebrate personal connections: Living Scrapbook, One Small Seed and Delicate Mix.

Living Scrapbook

With Facebook, MySpace and blogs having created a giant wave of creativity and fresh thought, this theme represents how a culture of showcasing “Who I am” in the digital space has crossed over into the physical world of home decor. Reflecting the quirkiness of personal tastes, Living Scrapbook presents a balanced, warm and charming palette featuring contemporary corals like Sico’s Ming Red (6052-65), sky blues such as Santorini (6005-31), olive greens like Olive Chartreuse (6102-54) and luminous yellows such as Star Coral (6099-42). The colors are modern, yet slightly degraded and non-mainstream.

One Small Seed

Reflective of the ongoing need to care for our environment, this palette also reflect a desire to personally relate to nature by inviting it into our homes—even on a small scale. Popular colours in this group include garden greens like Sico’s Namibian Desert (6142-74), dark soil browns like Pen and Ink (6206-73) and pastel blues like Lunar Month (6009-21). By surrounding ourselves with colours that remind us of earth, water and clay, we are comforted by the notion that nature will help us if we help it.

Delicate Mix

This palette offers simplicity with a hint of refinement and elegance, a new type of luxury that is more about appreciating the time and effort spent creating a piece of art or furniture as opposed to expressing wealth through glitz and excess. Highlighting this palette are elegant neutrals, nude pinks and subtle mauves such as Sico’s Grey Drizzle (6207-21), Satie White (6172-11), Frangipani (6178-31) and Furtive Mauve (6175-21). These colors, which celebrate the mind while soothing the soul, pair well with nuances of forged iron, steel, aluminum, polished concrete, wood, copper and oiled leathers.

“Everything about the 2012-2013 colour palette reflects personal connections that open the door to new possibilities,” notes Gévry. “The result will be the use of colours and other decor elements in unsuspected and very satisfying ways in the year ahead.”

Dunn-Edwards: Simply Refocus

Dunn-Edwards’ message in its 2012 color and design trend forecast is for consumers to Simply Refocus with four color stories that are referenced back to the company’s Perfect Palette color system.

“A re-emergence of color is what we are seeing across the board. People are not afraid of color anymore. It defines our surroundings and lifestyle in more ways today than ever before,” said Sara McLean, color marketing manager at Dunn-Edwards

Four color and design stories are represented—Simply Sentimental, Simply Refined, Simply Revolutionary and Simply Essential—each representing an attitude to color and design, which many of us can associate with. Each story provides inspiration, design prescriptions and a range of 12 colors from the Dunn-Edwards Perfect Palette color system. “The colors within each story provide the designer with ideas for walls, furnishing and décor—a full palette to work from.”

Simply Sentimental showcases a return to beautiful, layered design. With references to turn-of-the century color and design ideals, this is a story for those who appreciate pretty and saturated color along with many layers of design.

Simply Refined defines the latest trends in neutrals. With downtown loft references and spare attitudes to design, this story thread is for those appreciative of the clean, refined ideals in design.

Simply Revolutionary takes you on a journey into the world of science and technology with an eye towards those with unconventional attitudes to design. Splashes of bold, vivid color play with unusual design elements to surprise and delight the senses.

Simply Essential taps into the art of craftsmanship and fights against the technology-driven age. With colors grounded in earthy, pigmented colors and rich in color, this story provides a rustic, yet timelessly modern aesthetic.
