The faux-finishing industry has weathered the economic storm and now looks poised for some modest growth in 2011. PDR magazine asked for the thoughts of key executives from major faux and decorative painting product manufacturers recently, and here is what they had to say about the outlook for the current calendar year:

Kelly S. King, Director of Education and Product Development, Modern Masters Inc.: “It appears that the decorative finish market is starting to see an uptick. The gauge we use is our 36 Platinum Training Centers across the U.S. and the thousands of students I have trained nationally over the years. Though it is not a scientific measurement, communication with past students and current training centers enables me to keep my fingers on the pulse of the decorative painting project starts. The reports are that decorative finishers are seeing continual increase in projects sales and also they are becoming more steady. This should result in sales of decorative painting products that fit a more competitive marketplace such as our Metallic Plasters, which goes further and can be accomplished in less layers. This is how the West was won—with trompe l’oeil murals, painted finishes, plenty of hard work and a whole lot of talent from a dedicated group of professionals.

This dedicated group included the members of the Metro Artisans Guild, the International Decorative Artisans League’s chapter in the Greater St. Louis area. Fifteen artists from MAG lent their talents to the Wild West Fest, a philanthropic project undertaken to benefit CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Children in St. Louis County.

The project involved the creation of 11 spectacular playhouses using a Western town theme. MAG members participated in the creation of eight of the playhouses; other businesses in the St. Louis area created the three others. Playhouses included a schoolhouse, restaurant, general store, stable/blacksmith, hotel, movie theater, boat—even an old-fashioned Western jail.

Trompe l’oeil was a major part of all 11 of the playhouse projects. Among the trompe l’oeil effects created were: cowboys and cowboy boots, merchandise in a general store, tasty-looking food and beverages in the restaurant, a silhouette of a blacksmith working with an anvil, the front desk of the hotel, the ticket window at the theater, authentic-looking signage on every building, and (more…)

The Old World finishes that were popular for so long in the decorative painting market are giving way to looks that are more contemporary—simpler, cleaner and more linear.

This change in direction is most likely a direct result of the economic slowdown, which caused many homeowners to forgo painting and decorating projects for the last couple of years. As the economic recovery slowly takes hold, consumers are once again looking for ways to decorate their walls but for the most part are doing so in less inexpensive and less ostentatious ways.

“Contemporary, clean, high gloss and metallic finishes are currently in demand in comparison to five or 10 years ago where heavier, multi-layered Old World finishes were desired,” stated Raymond Sandor, Founder & President, Faux Effects International Inc.

Jerry Russo, president of Roman Architectural Finishes, confirmed that metallics will continue to be a major trend in the faux-finishing market. “If someone is going to spend money on a faux finish, they want it to be (more…)
