AkzoNobel, the world’s largest paint manufacturer, has named Terra Cotta Rose, a blushing, lively and juicy red as its 2012 Color of the Year.

Migrating from a citrus yellow, the 2011 Color of the Year, AkzoNobel’s color experts believe that color trends overall are “progressing into something more confident and robust” as we head into 2012, with “possibilities” selected as the dominant theme.

This is in keeping with a AkzoNobel’s color trend analysis, which identified take-charge optimism as a major influence for 2012. Akin to a political party convention, AkzNobel’s color experts from all parts of the globe gather annually in September (more…)

With 2012 just around the corner, quite a few national and regional paint manufacturers are releasing their color trend forecasts for the coming year. Common threads seem to be the use of color as a remedy to what ails us—whether it be a splash of bold color to lift our mood or a tranquil color to provide a backdrop for a peaceful retreat.

Here are specific color forecasts from five of the paint industry’s most well-known paint manufacturers:

Benjamin Moore: Blue Will Be Big

Benjamin Moore color experts are forecasting that blue will be big in 2012 as the population seeks out a sense of calm, trust, and the tried-and-true. The paint company’s top color pick for the coming year is Wythe Blue HC-143, a blue green hue with a cool gray cast to it.

“It’s interesting that Wythe Blue is from our historical color collection,” said Sonu Mathew, ASID, IIDA and Benjamin Moore’s senior interior designer. “We’ve actually cited it because it has a modern edge, yet it’s so rooted in history and is respectful of what’s classic and enduring.” (more…)

Room décor for tween and early teen girls isn’t all about pink motifs and fairy-tale princesses anymore, according to research conducted by WallPops, a line of peel-and-stick wall art from Brewster Home Fashions.

WallPops conducted focus groups to determine what types of wall art would appeal to the evolving tastes of girls in the age range of 11 to 13. What this research revealed is that these girls like a variety of vibrant colors beyond pink, including bright greens, oranges and blues as a means of distinguishing themselves from girls who are younger in age from themselves.

Focus groups with college students revealed a further evolution of color preferences. This age group was found to be moving beyond strong hues toward more subtle neutrals and more mature designs, such as animal prints as depicted in WallPops Go Wild, a black-and-white zebra pattern. An interesting twist is that pink reasserts itself as a more popular color choice, now that this group no longer feels the urge to differentiate themselves from girls who are younger than them.

“We have known for years that tweens are an emerging demographic, and the trend for this group to decorate is one of the hottest today,” said Paula Berberian, (more…)

Next year in home fashion you can expect to see a surprising range of blues, a new family of purples, lots of pinks and color-cast neutrals. According to the experts surveyed for Paint & Decorating Retailer magazine’s 41st annual color forecast, home fashion is showing an early rebound from the recession and by 2011 will exhibit a kaleidoscope of colors.

Whether consumers are feeling more upbeat or simply need relief from all of the bad news, experts said there’s no doubt that interesting colors and color combinations are working their way into home décor. They said to look for vibrant colors and softly blended neutrals, deep and pale hues, burnished furnishings and barely-there textiles.

Experts reported that the single top color in this palette most certainly will come from the blue family and may be appear as a green-blue (turquoise) or a red-blue (orchid).
A blue-green is at the top of the Pantone Color Institute’s list of “hot” colors. The Institute chose turquoise as the No. 1 color for 2010 and said it will remain popular well into 2011.
