New Benjamin Moore CEO and President Robert S. (Bob) Merritt identified “rebuilding relationships within the independent retailer system” as the company’s top priority.

“Right now, we’re focused on re-establishing some credibility that we had lost within the retailer network,” said Merritt, who comes to Benjamin Moore after a successful three-decade career as an executive in the restaurant and food preparation and distribution industries. He took the helm of the Montvale, N.J.-based paint manufacturer in early June following the abrupt dismissal of predecessor Denis Abrams.

In a 30-minute telephone interview with Paint & Decorating Retailer magazine on Aug. 7, Merritt acknowledged that the company needed to “take a good hard look” at past decisions that were viewed by the Benjamin Moore’s independent retailer network in a negative manner. (more…)

With 2012 just around the corner, quite a few national and regional paint manufacturers are releasing their color trend forecasts for the coming year. Common threads seem to be the use of color as a remedy to what ails us—whether it be a splash of bold color to lift our mood or a tranquil color to provide a backdrop for a peaceful retreat.

Here are specific color forecasts from five of the paint industry’s most well-known paint manufacturers:

Benjamin Moore: Blue Will Be Big

Benjamin Moore color experts are forecasting that blue will be big in 2012 as the population seeks out a sense of calm, trust, and the tried-and-true. The paint company’s top color pick for the coming year is Wythe Blue HC-143, a blue green hue with a cool gray cast to it.

“It’s interesting that Wythe Blue is from our historical color collection,” said Sonu Mathew, ASID, IIDA and Benjamin Moore’s senior interior designer. “We’ve actually cited it because it has a modern edge, yet it’s so rooted in history and is respectful of what’s classic and enduring.” (more…)

As the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) approaches the one-year mark, industry reviews are mixed.

Sure, everyone wants to make housing safer for children and their families. But there have been a lot of changes in the rule, according to some sources, that have resulted in a lot of confusion and cost for contractors.

Effective April 22 of last year, the rule impacts contractors who perform work in homes, child-care facilities or schools built before 1978. Those contractors must now be certified through an intensive eight-hour training course at training facilities approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The training is designed to ensure that contractors follow strict work practices to control lead-paint dust during renovation. Non-complying contractors face stiff fines and penalties which, by some estimates, could exceed $37,500 per day. (more…)
