Why What Happens in Vegas Should Not Always Stay in Vegas

The upcoming PDRA Paint & Accessories Show at the National Hardware Show® in Las Vegas promises to be an exciting mix of sourcing, networking, and learning for those who attend the show, which runs from May 6-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The show will also provide an excellent way for retailers to do some very effective social networking, both in person and online.

As a small independent retailer, you should already be aware of the importance of online social networking. Online social media is no longer something that retailers can afford to ignore. If you are planning to head off to the PDRA Paint & Accessories Show at the National Hardware Show this year, doing a just a small amount of planning now will result in a wealth of material for all of your social media accounts.

Good News for Retail Paint & Decorating Sales

With the PDRA Paint & Accessories Show at the National Hardware Show® in Las Vegas fast approaching, we here at PDRA, as well as many industry insiders, are applauding some very good news: residential and commercial construction industry hiring has reached its highest level since June of 2009.

According to the article "New Report Marks Hiring Growth" in the April issue of Paint & Decorating Retailer, a recent report published by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) stated that construction employers added and estimated 15,000 workers to payrolls in February 2014. In fact, the rate of construction hiring has outpaced hiring in the overall economy for the past year, according to Ken Simonson, AGC's chief economist.

One of the most common reasons business owners give for not keeping their all-important social media accounts up to date is lack of inspiration. Keeping those accounts updated is very important, but staring at a Facebook or Pinterest update page can be a daunting task when there is just nothing fresh and exciting that comes to mind.

Most large retailers in this busy, social-media driven world have realized the importance of keeping fresh content on their social media pages, and many of them are doing a fantastic job at keeping things new and up-to-date.

The Importance of Going Mobile

In today's fast paced world, just about everyone has a mobile smartphone. According to, a marketing and analytics website, in 2013 56% of American adults were smartphone users, and 75% of Americans under the age of 43 were smartphone users. Digby also predicts that by 2015, 80% of U.S. cell phone users will have smartphones.

Bear with me for a moment and consider a few more statistics from

• 70% of shoppers used a smartphone while in a retail store in 2013.
• 80% of smartphone owners want more mobile-optimized product information while they're shopping in stores.

Here are several more statistics to which retailers should pay close attention:

• 57% of consumers will not recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site.
• 40% of consumers will go to a competitor's site after a bad mobile experience.
