Using social media for your business is no longer an option, it’s something all businesses need to do on an ongoing basis. Social media is now a tool for doing business just like the telephone, email, and newspaper ads.

Identifying your business goals is the first step to using social media effectively. Do you want to gain exposure, retain existing customers, ease customer-service bottlenecks, or all of the above? One thing that is very important to remember about social media when deciding what your social media goals are is this: social media cannot turn around or save a business that is already having problems.

The Wonderful World of Color

The color forecast for 2013-2014 is out, and once again is a reflection of our ever-changing times. For example, Emerald Green has been declared the top color for 2013 by Pantone. A color that has long represented newness and growth, green represents moving forward in the difficult economic times we live in. A quick look around any furniture or home goods store in 2013 will most likely turn up a host of accessories and home décor items done in shades of emerald. That said, blue has also been predicted to be a major player in the world of color for 2013-2014. Again, difficult times make the soothing hues of blue attractive to consumers.

Modest Gains for Independents in First Quarter 2013

Paint and decorating stores posted modest gains overall for the first quarter of 2013 over the first quarter of the previous year. Not all regions fared well, however, with the Midwest posting losses of 5.9% from the first quarter of 2012. Canadian paint and decorating retailers also posted a loss compared to last year's first quarter figures.

On a positive note, the Consumer Confidence index has been above 50 since November of 2011, settling back to just below 60 in March of 3013. New home starts have been showing solid growth trends from a low 18 months ago of 600,000 units to just over 1,000,000 units.
